Your member ID card

Your member ID card

Your health insurance card is also known as your member ID card. It's your proof of insurance when you visit the doctor's office or hospital.

When you sign up for a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) health insurance plan, you'll receive a member ID card in the mail. Your ID card is your identification that says, "I'm a Blue Cross NC member."

It's a good idea to keep this card in your wallet so you'll always have it with you at the doctor's office or hospital. It allows the clinic to verify your benefits and coverage so you don't overpay for medical care.

You can also access your member ID card online in your Blue Connect℠ member portal.

The front of your card

On the front of your member ID card, you'll see your name and your Subscriber ID number, sometimes called a Member ID number. You'll need this number when calling customer service, receiving medical care, or picking up prescriptions.

On the right-hand side of your card, you'll find your plan name, along with information about your coverage and costs. Here you'll find your deductible amount and out-of-pocket maximum.

Under "Member Responsibility," you'll find your copayment amounts for in-network services at a primary care doctor's office, a specialist's office, an urgent care center, and an emergency room.

The back of your card

We list important, toll-free numbers here in case you need help.

If you need to speak with a Customer Service professional, use the first number on the back of your card for questions about your benefits and coverage.

For questions about prescription drug benefits, call the Pharmacist Help Desk number listed.

For questions about pre-approval or authorization for a medical service, call the Prior Review / Certification number listed.

If you need medical services while traveling outside your network or state, use the Locate Non-NC Provider number for out-of-area care.

Lost your card?

If you've lost or misplaced your member ID card, you can order a new one online in your Blue Connect member portal. You can also request a new card by calling customer service at 877-258-3334. Replacement cards are typically mailed to your home address in 3-5 business days.

Access your card online

Many doctors' offices now accept insurance cards digitally. If you don't want to carry your physical member ID card with you, you can safely view and store it on your smartphone.

Log in to Blue Connect on your phone or tablet and choose "ID Card" from the home menu. There, you can view, download, or print your card.

If your doctor doesn't accept digital ID cards, don't worry – you'll still get a physical card at the start of each plan year.

Add your card to your mobile wallet

By adding your member ID card to your mobile wallet, you'll have easy access to your insurance information whenever you might need it, even without WiFi or a cellular connection. You can also share your card with others on your plan.

This feature is only available on the Blue Connect Mobile NC app, so make sure you've downloaded the app before you get started.

Step 1: Log in to the Blue Connect app on your Apple or Google device.
