Changes to Prescription Eyewear Allowance for Medicare Advantage Members
As of January 1, 2025, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) providers can no longer submit claims for routine prescription eyewear for Medicare Advantage (including EGWPs and Experience Health) Members.
Instead, Medicare Advantage members can use their Vision Allowance on the Blue FlexCard to pay for prescription eyewear. The Blue FlexCard is a debit card that gives members access to multiple allowances on one card. Depending on the member's plan benefits, these allowances may include an Over-the-Counter allowance, a Home Safety Device allowance, and a Vision allowance. Members can swipe this debit card at different locations to spend their allowances.
There is no impact to Medicare-covered eyewear post-cataract surgery.
Members can call the Blue FlexCard call center at 844-428-9837 if they have questions.
